Poetry Of both Gwen Harwood and Bruce Dawe, Help Please!!?
I will try, I know you are studying for your HSC. Well, without a copy of the poem, it is a little hard. Ronald Ryan was the last man to be hung in Australia ,and he swore he was innocent. From memory, he was accused of shooting a prison guard, while breaking free from prison, There was a number of unexplained questions regarding his guilt or innocence. I guess from my reading of Druce Dawe is that he is anti-death penalty. Look at his use of images, what do they connote, are they dark in what they suggest. Let your imagination have full reign. Remember as long as you can justify your answer by referring to the text, there are no right or wrong answers. The way to do THAS is by feeling the words of the poem. What does your heart tell you. Do not worry about understanding it, but feel it. What does his use of various words do to you. How do these words, and their con nations, affect you emotionally. Do not worry about understanding or rationalising the poem, but read it slowly, and let his or her words, affect you. Literary div ices, such things as metaphor (implied similarities, such as. if I say "the moon dances across the Night sky", I am suggesting that the moon is like a person dancing, and I would use this device in a poem to suggest joy or other emotions) are used to suggest emotion. Remember emotive language (like metaphor, or simile -"the moon is LIKE a dancing girl", or personification - giving inanimate objects human characteristics, and other figurative uses of language are a controlled use of ambiguity to suggest strong emotion. Look carefully at the poets choice of words and use of figurative language, and how this AFFects you, Then give your response. What the teacher wants to see is your response to this poem, which is supported by your emotional and critical response. Your response can only be evoked by the poet's use of language and various figures of speech. Good luck and have confidence in what your heart tells you. There is no wrong or right answer, but some answers are much better than others because the person has truly engaged with the poem and allowed their heartrespondoned to it. I hope this helps. Good luck with it.
