How can i get the dummy/soother/pacifier off my baby!your story please!!?

my daughter is 5 mths old and because i was feeding and because the latest recommendations are to use a soother to help prevent sids,we gave her one. she is 5 mths old now fully weaned from the and starting solids. we want to get the dummy off her now as it might be easier than when she is older-so tonight we put her in the cot and she cried and cried,so we took her up,cuddled her and put her back in again,but she went bananas-we dont believe in the cry it out method so we gave in and gave her the dummy. so i just dont know where or how or when to start weaning the dummy off her-any suggestions gratefully appreciated. thanks a million
